Airport Way
Stockton, CA 95206
San Joaquin County Public Health Services Environmental Health Division (PHS/EHD)
has reviewed the May 1999 Subsurface Investigation and Groundwater Monitoring
Report dated June 22, 1999 prepared by Philip Services Corp, The report defines the
vertical and lateral extent of contamination in the soil at the above referenced site. Cone
Penetrometry Test (CPT) borings evidence Non Detectable (ND) concentrations of
petroleum contaminants from soil samples collected from 30 and 80 feet below surface
grade (bsg). Groundwater samples collected from CPT borings evidence Benzene;
Toluene, Ethyl Benzene and Xylene (BTEX) as high as 0.66 parts per billion (ppb), 0.8
ppb, 0.51ppb, and 2.3 ppb respectively in groundwater. Total Petroleum hydrocarbon as
gasoline (TPH-g) was 100 ppb in groundwater from borings CPT2 and 3.
Quarterly Monitoring (QM) reports do not show a consistent decrease in contaminant
concentrations in groundwater samples from Monitoring Wells (MWs) 1, 10, and 12.
MWs 2, 3, 5, 7, 8 and i l have evidenced ND results for contaminants in groundwater for
several consecutive QM events. Vapor Sparge Wells (SPs) and Pieziometer Wells (PZs)
are located at the site. Groundwater from SPs has not been sampled in the past and PZs
have not been sampled since November 15, 1994. PZs sampled on November 15, 1994
revealed groundwater concentrations of BTEX at 4,000 parts per billion (ppb), 3,000 ppb,
600 ppb and 4,800 ppb. TPH-g was evidenced in groundwater at 25,000 ppb from PZ2.
SPsl and 2 and PZl and 2 are near the contaminant source area and should be sampled
during the next QM event. If analytical results from these wells reflect a decrease of
contaminants, a reduction in source contaminant mass may be demonstrated. The
groundwater should be analyzed for BTEX. TPH-g and Oxygenates. MWs 2,3,5,6,7,8
and 11 do not need to be sampled until further directed by PHS/EHD. The remaining
MWs should be sampled quarterly. Tabulate all results (including historical sampling
results for PZ 1 and 2) in the next QM report.
A Division of San Joaquin C,mnty Heald,. Care Services
