2 MAY 1999 SUBSURFACE INVESTIGATION
Philip drove three borings, and collected soil and groundwater samples on May 18,
1999 to further assess the extent of petroleum impact Philip also performed a survey
to locate off-site water wells in the vicinity of the project site Procedures and results
of this investigation are described in the following sections
2.1 Investigation Procedures
IPhilip utilized Gregg In Situ, Inc of Martinez, California to drive three CPT
borings through soil and groundwater zones to depths of 80 to 90 feet bgs
CPT depths were based on the historic lowest level of groundwater, which
PHS/EHD reported occurred in 1978 The locations of borings CPT-1, CPT-2,
and CPT-3, shown in Figure 2, were placed at hydraulically downgradient
positions relative to the former USTs to evaluate the furthermost extent of
groundwater impact CPT soundings and pore pressure dissipation tests were
performed to assess soil strata and evaluate current depth to groundwater
' Permits to drive these borings were obtained from the PHS/EHD
Soil samples were collected using Hydropunch rods, which were driven in
adjacent holes to the CPT borings Groundwater samples were collected with
bailers lowered through the rods, which were screened at the sampling depth
Soil and groundwater sample depths were based on the CPT hydrogeologic
data In each borehole, one soil sample was initially collected in the vadose
zone dust above the groundwater table, and another soil sample was collected
near the termination depth Also in each borehole, one groundwater sample
was collected just below the top of the groundwater table, and another
groundwater sample was collected near the termination depth
Following collection, samples were capped in clean laboratory-provided
containers, labeled, placed in an iced chest, and delivered to Acculabs Inc in
Davis, California for chemical testing The soil and groundwater samples were
analyzed for TPH-G and benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX)
rusing Method 8015/8020 Samples were also analyzed for MTBE, ETBE,
TBA, TAME, and DIPE using Method 8260
2.2 Sample Analytical Results
All the CPT soil samples contained non-detectable concentrations of TPH-G,
BTEX, and oxygenate compounds In addition, there were no detectable
May 1999 Subsurface Investigation and Groundwater Monitoring Report
The Earthgrains Company Facility
2651 South Airport Way
Stockton California
Prepared for THE EARTHGRAINS COMPANY Prepared by Philip Services Corp
F 11217821121782EG1125997W599REP DOC June 22 1999
5
