Smoo
fir..
Specific data on other domestic wells in the area is not available,
but communications with a local water well driller revealed that
most wells produce from aquifers below 100 feet.
DEPTH TO WATER TABLE:
According to the latest published map issued by the San Joaquin
County Flood Control and Water Conservation District, (Plate V, ) the
water table at this location is approximately +15 feet, or about 10
feet below ground level . However , during tank removal and soil
sampling, to a depth of about 10 feet, it was reported that no water
was encountered in the hole, and no dampness of soil was noted. In
order to clarify this apparent inconsistency, the writer visited the
offices of the San Joaquin Flood Control District. A discussion
with Mr,. Hirata revealed that the measurements are of static fluid
levels, and not the top of potential aquifers. Although he could
not reveal specific well data, he indicated that the water wells in
the area were open to zones below 100 feet. A review of the
literature indicates that there are many unconnected, discontinuous
aquifers in this area. The fact that no moisture or water was
present in the excavation supports these data.
PRIOR TANK USE:
The UST was used for personal use, and had contained leaded
gasoline. There are no records available to indicate when the tank
was installed , or the amount of fuel usage.
REVIEW OF WORD; DONE SINCE BEGINNING OF PROJECT:
The following information was provided to the writer by Thorpe Oil
and others, and is assumed to be accurate. However , since the
writer did not witness any of the work done an this project, he
cannot guarantee that other information, not known to the writer,
may affect the information and conclusions presented here.
On March 31 , 1989, Jim Thorpe Oil , Inc. filed a Permanent Closure
/Tank Removal Plan with the San Joaquin Local Health District to
remove an underground 2,000 gallon regular gasoline storage tank
from a private residence located at 23675 So. Airport Way, Manteca,
CA. The Plan was approved on April 24, 1989; (refer to Exhibit C
for details. )
On May 9, Jim Thorpe Oil Inc. removed a 2,000 gallon, double
compartment gasoline storage tank from the property. The tank had
been coated prior to installation, and was in excellent condition.
It apparently had been built as a marine anchoring buoy; the walls
were approximately 1/2" thick. Richard Thorpe, who was on the site,
reported that there was only a very slight odor detectable, and no
visible discoloration of the soil . Samples were taken at each end
2
