06/28/1999 10:22 209-835-4767 PnSTNET PAGE 06!19 <br />All employees who will possibly come into contact with <br />the chemicals shall wear the appropriate PPE. <br />5.2.1 Volatile Aromatic Hydrocarbons <br />Typically, the concentrated vapor of pure aromatic <br />hydrocarbons can cause central nervous system damage, depending the <br />compound, hepatic, renal, or bone marrow disorders_ The vapor is absorbed <br />through the lungs and the liquid may be absorbed through the skin. <br />Prolonged skin contact can cause de -fatting of the skin, leading to dermatitis. <br />In addition benzene is a confmned carcinogen. These affects have been <br />reported for pure chemical substance. <br />6.0 Air Monitoring Plan <br />Due to the nature of the chemicals on site and the scope of the <br />operations, air monitoring will be conducted to prevent any build up <br />of volatile hydrocarbons that may be an explosive hazard. The <br />contractor will conduct monitoring, using a direct reading from a <br />combustible gas indicator, periodically during the course of the <br />operation. Lower explosive levels will be maintained below 10%. If <br />LEL readings at anytime exceed 10%, work will be stopped and all <br />personnel evacuated until acceptable LEL readings are obtained. <br />6.1 Confined Space Entry <br />There will be no confined space entry during this portion of <br />operation. <br />7.0 Safety Equipment <br />a_ Fire truck <br />b. First aid team <br />c. Ambulance (if requested) <br />
