0 0 <br />$IM$ METAL <br />SAFETY, HEALTH, ENVIRONMENTAL & COMMUNITY <br />MANAGEMENT PROCEDURE <br />Hazard Communication <br />"Right to Know" <br />SM -SAFETY -01 <br />Date of Most Recent Revision: June 26 <br />Page 1 of 3 <br />2007 <br />• Hazard Communication applies to operations that use or store hazardous chemicals at quantities <br />greater than normal household quantities <br />• Haz com, Hazard Communication and Right -To -Know are all terms used to talk about worker's <br />rights to know about the safety and health precautions associated with hazardous chemical <br />substances they may handle, use or be exposed to on a site. <br />• Hazardous chemical substances include a wide range of chemicals including paints, adhesives, <br />gasoline, diesel, hydraulic fluids, grease, solvents, cements, compressed fuel gases and even welding <br />rods. <br />• Chemicals can enter the body thru inhalation, absorption, ingestion or injection <br />MSDS "Material Safety Data Sheets" are an important part of your company's <br />Hazard Communication program. Yet, there is more you need to know in order to <br />work with chemicals safely and respond if there is an emergency involving <br />chemicals. <br />Exclusions: Hazardous waste as defined by RCRA and hazardous substances as defined by CERCLA and <br />are the focus of remedial action operations are not included in these requirements. <br />Requirements: <br />• Ensure all containers on-site are labeled with the contents of the container. Portable or transfer <br />containers do not need to be labeled if they are filled, used till empty and are always in full control <br />of the same employee. <br />• Obtain material safety data sheets (MSDS) for all hazardous chemical on site and keep them in an <br />area accessible to employees. <br />• Employer must maintain an up-to-date "Chemical List" which inventories all chemicals you may be <br />exposed to at each jobsite. <br />
