These remain below the SB 14 reporting <br />threshold and are therefore not addressed in the 2011 SB14 Plan. <br />For SNUCA <br />4.8 Site -Wide Battery Collection <br />In 2009 SNUCA reevaluated their process for collecting batteries and sending them <br />off-site as hazardous waste. Batteries are currently collected at various locations <br />throughout the site and managed as Universal Waste. The Universal Waste batteries are <br />collected, sorted, containerized and shipped offsite to a battery recycler by SNUCA <br />Waste Management and Pollution Prevention staff. Lead acid batteries larger than 2.5 lbs <br />are exempt from reporting. In CY10 only 1 I lbs were shipped off-site as hazardous <br />waste. <br />4.9 Building 968/120 Mercury Light Bulbs <br />Mercury light bulbs are used in specialty equipment at SNUCA, specifically equipment <br />needing high flux UV light and visual production projector lamps. Mercury light bulbs <br />are now managed as Universal Waste -Lamps instead of hazardous waste and are sent <br />offsite for recycle. In CY 10 only 2 lbs were shipped offsite as hazardous waste. <br />4.10 SNL/CA Site Wide Oil -contaminated Debris <br />Oil -contaminated debris is generated by different operations around the site, which <br />include service and repair maintenance, combustion engine research activities, fabricating <br />and/or machining parts/equipment. In 2004 several different laundry services were <br />investigated. One of the services was chosen for a pilot program. The service was <br />determined to be too costly due to shop towels not being returned to be laundered. This waste <br />stream is generated primarily in the following forms: <br />• Isopropyl alcohol used to clean parts containing organic contaminants and as <br />drying agent in some metal finishing applications. <br />• Ethyl alcohol used to clean parts and equipment containing organic contaminants <br />in research applications. <br />Ethylene glycol used as a heat -exchange fluid in cooling systems for experimental <br />equipment will be a waste stream.
