13. CWC 791 - Liquids with pH<2
Site 2006 Quantity (lb) 2010 quantity (lb)
LLNL 24,030 1491
13.1 Ouartz sample preparation
In 2006, the majority (16,000 lbs) ofthis CWC 791 waste stream was attributed to quartz
sample preparation at the LLNL Center for Accelerator Mass Spectrometry. The LLNL
2007 SB14 plan discussed potential reduction ofthis waste stream through off-site
sample preparation and use of smaller samples. The majority of quartz sample
preparation is now performed off-site, reducing this waste stream to under 500 pounds
per year.
Note that the 2010 waste volume is below the SB 14 reporting threshold and so this waste
stream is not carried forward into the 2011 SB 14 Plan.
September 1, 2011 SB 14 Report
33
14. CWC 792: Liquids With pH52 With Metals
Site 12006 Quantity (lb) 2010 quantity (lb)
LBNL
18,423 8,010
14.1 Ultra High Vacuum Cleanine Facility
This waste stream is generated as a result of metal surface cleaning operations. Metal
parts are cleaned through a multi step process including the following:
• Ultrasonic aqueous degreasing,
• Washing with commercial industrial cleaners (such as 909, B.N., Blue Gold, and
Mirachem 500 cleaners),
• Surface cleaning with acidic solutions, and
• DI -water and tap water rinsing,
The waste stream consists of acidic wastes that contain particles and dissolved metals.
LBNL evaluated the possibilities of extending the useful life of the acidic solutions. The
evaluation concluded that extending the useful life of acidic solutions is not technically
feasible. The reduction in generation in 2010 is due to decreased operations.
September 1, 2011 SB 14 Report
34
