3. CWC 181: Other inorganic solid waste <br />Site 2006 Quantity (lb)2010 uantit Ib <br />SLAC 1404 1333 <br />LLNL 175 175 <br />Primary waste generators: <br />Far SLAC <br />3.1 Metal finishing overations including ar cleaning al plating <br />CWC 181, and CWC 711 are generated through the MFO. <br />The Metal Finishing operations perform a variety of activities to meet demanding and <br />sometimes unique metal finishing specifications needed to fabricate equipment for high- <br />powered electrical equipment. The uses of materials that produce these wastes are <br />essential for successful operations. CWC 181, which is in the form of spent filters used <br />in cyanide baths, is reduced by extending the life of the filters by monitoring their <br />pressure drop. <br />For LLNL <br />3.2 Analytical Lab Operations <br />The 2007 SB14 Plan addressed 24 lbs of CWC 181 waste generated from the disposal of <br />spent glass tubes used in the Accelerator Mass Spectrometer. This waste stream varies <br />from year-to-year, and is dependent on the number of samples processed. During 2010 <br />there was an increase in demand for processed samples resulting in 75 lbs of spent glass <br />tube waste. No other applicable Category C CWC 181 waste was generated during 2010. <br />A new interface is currently being evaluated that could substantially reduce or eliminate <br />the use of glass tubes for sample processing. If deemed feasible, the new process could <br />begin implementation next year. <br />The 2007 SB14 Plan mentions 43 lbs of C WC I gl Category C wastes coming from <br />engineering machine shops related to metal chip and contaminated tools. The remaining <br />8 lbs from the 2007 SB14 PIan were not addressed. In 2010, no Category C waste was <br />generated from engineering activities. <br />6. CWC 791: Liquids withpH52 <br />Site 2006 Quantity (lb)2010 quantity (lb) <br />LLNL 228 50 <br />6.1 Etchine operations <br />B153 houses the Center for Micro -and Nanotechnology (CMNT), which develops and <br />applies microscale and nanoscale technologies to support LLNL missions. The research <br />focuses on materials, devices, instruments and systems that require microfabricated <br />components. In 2006, CMNT generated 45 lbs of CWC 791 wastes and generated 50 lbs <br />of CWC 791 wastes in 2010. The waste generated from CMNT activities are mainly <br />from lab packs of individual small containers used for etching substrates for <br />microtechnology devices. CMNT is a leader in incorporating chemical management best <br />practices, including encouraging reuse, use of small volumes and alternative chemicals. <br />An additional 47 lbs of Category C CWC 791 waste was generated in 2006 from the <br />T2801 semiconductor laboratory, which was closed in 2007. <br />The remaining 2006 CWC 791 wastes were generated from NIF optics processes <br />(addressed under CWC 135, above) and other processes no longer generating CWC 791 <br />wastes. <br />September 1, 2011 SB 14 Report 37 September 1, 2011 SR 14 Report 40 <br />
