11. CWC 741: Liquids with Halogenated Organic Compounds (.> 1000 mgn)
l 1.1 Italouenated Solvent Waste from Research Activities
CWC 741 waste streams are from laboratory research activities. The predominant
generator is the nano -technology research facility. The waste streams are comprised of
chemical mixtures from research activities, including, chlorobenzene, methylene
chloride, chloroform, polyfluorene, toluene, methanol, acetonitrile and many others.
Nano -technology research at LBNL has increased significantly over the last 10 years and
is expected to continue to grow due to the expanded research scope and focus by the
scientific community cutting edge science performed at the laboratory. The investment
into highly sophisticated and advanced nanotechnology equipment has made LBNL a
leadirig location for nanotechnology investigations in several topical areas. With this
increase in research, this waste stream generated by the nano -technology research facility
has shown an increase in volume. Measures to manage this increase will be investigated
while traditional approaches are promoted.
September 1, 2015 SB 14 Report III -16
