4. CWC 181: Other inorganic solid waste
Site 2010
SLAC 333
LLNL 75
For SLAC
2014 qua
240
0 -
4.1 Metal finishing operations including parts cleaning and metal plating
Spent cyanide filters are generated by the plating shop operations. CWC 181, which is
in the form of spent filters used in cyanide baths, is reduced by extending the life of the
fiIters by monitoring their pressure drop. Additional waste reduction measures for the
fiIters are not feasible until the cyanide bath usage is actually eliminated.
For LLNL
4.2 Anaiyticat Lab Operations
In 2011, chemistry, materials and life science research activities in B361 generated 75
pounds of this waste stream through the disposal of spent glass tubes. The tubes used in
the Accelerator Mass Spectrometer contained materials that required the spent tubes to be
packed in mineral oil prior to disposal.
A new interface was evaluated in 2011 and implemented ui 2012 that reduced both the
volume and the toxicity of this was stream. In 2014, only 29 pounds of hazardous waste
was generated and no extremely hazardous waste was generated from this process.
September 1, 2015 SB 14 Report
