but recommended considering bench -scale testing of alternative non -cyanide plating <br />chemicals offered by vendors. This is expected to be a research project in itself that <br />requires fabrication and plating of actual parts to meet and gain approval by the SLAC <br />research community. Application of non -cyanide plating alternatives will be <br />considered on a case-by-case basis to see if funding is available to test fabricated parts <br />in both cyanide and non -cyanide plating applications, and to see if non -copper cyanide <br />techniques can meet specifications. <br />SLAC will review opportunities to fund research in the reduction of cyanide plating on <br />a six month basis. If funding is found to be available, SLAC will implement plans to <br />conduct the research and testing needed to determine the feasibility of reducing the use <br />of cyanide. BUILDING 2 AND BUILDING 70A AND BUILDING 67 GENERAL LABORATORY <br />WASTE GENERATION PROCESSES <br />This waste stream consists of acidic wastewaters, and is generated as a result of general <br />laboratory processes. This waste stream had been categorized as CWC 134 in the past. <br />The waste stream is generated primarily in two research buildings, building 2, 70A, and <br />67 where wastewaters from multiple sinks in different laboratories are collected in one <br />retention tank at each. building. <br />The wastewater is subsequently neutralized and discharged to a POTW. The treatment <br />consists of a neutralization process, which is authorized by California Tiered Permitting <br />program under Conditional Authorization. <br />PREVENTION EVALUATION <br />LBNL conducted a study to investigate the possibility of reusing the wastewaters as <br />makeup water for the cooling towers. Preliminary indications were that this project <br />would be too expensive, however the plan was eventually approved and funded. The <br />reuse option for this water was implemented in January 2011 and is expected to result <br />in approximately 500,000 gallons of water saved per year. <br />September 1, 2011 SB14 Plan <br />13 <br />
