PLATING SHOP FLOW DIAGRAM FOR RECLAIMED RINSE WATER PROCESS <br />Water generated from the rinsing of pans in the B322 plating shop is typically <br />contaminated with organic chemicals and hazardous metals used in plating operations. <br />While the shops employ pollution prevention measures to minimize wastewater <br />generation during rinsing operations by using spray rinsing of parts rather than drag out <br />rinsing, this is still one of the largest hazardous waste streams at LLNL. <br />The wastewater generated from this process is reclaimed using an evaporator unit, hard - <br />plumbed into the B322 shop's rinse water collection system. Water processed in the <br />evaporator is then reused as rinse water in the shop. <br />September 1, 2011 SB 14 Plan <br />18 <br />The 2007 SB 14 Plan included a CWC 134 waste stream of 1,344,102 pounds <br />(approximately 168,000 gallons), which was attributed to rinse water processed and <br />reused in the Engineering plating shop. Although a large volume of water was processed <br />through the unit, only a small fraction (approximately 660 gallons/year) was actually <br />disposed of as hazardous waste. The remaining liquid was returned to the plating shop <br />process for reuse. Because the water was reclaimed and reused, the 2007 SB14 Plan did <br />not include it in Category B calculations, although it was documented in the plan. <br />For consistency, we are documenting the waste stream associated with the reclaimed <br />rinse water unit here, but as in 2006, we are not including it in our Category B <br />calculations. <br />For 2010, the reclaimed rinse water unit is still operational and continues to generate only <br />about 330 gallons every six months. <br />Description of Measure: <br />LLNL plans to continue with current source reduction measures using the evaporator <br />to reclaim rinse water and return it back to the plating shop for reuse. <br />No other source reduction measures are planned at this time. <br />September 1, 2011 SB 14 Plan <br />19 <br />
