is a necessary step since some of the waste originates from laboratory areas that may
introduce hazardous contaminants into the waste stream.
Periodically, the custodial organization evaluates new products, looking for alternatives
that increase worker health and safety and reduce impact to the environment. Three years
ago, floor care products were evaluated but none were available that had the required
level of performance.
SOURCE REDUCTION/POLLUTION PREVENTION EVALUATION
Description of Measure:
LLNL plans to continue the existing source reduction measures and best management
practices, such as limiting the number of wax layers that can be applied prior to
stripping, performing floor care only when needed and continuing to evaluate
alternative floor cleaning products that could lead to the reduction or elimination of
hazardous waste.
A product evaluation cycle is currently underway with an emphasis on Green Seal
certified floor care products.
September 1, 2011 SB 14 Plan
16
1.2 CWC 132 — Aqueous solution from rinse etch tank B321
Site 2010 quantity (lb)
LLNL 23,700 Ib
Raw Materials: Etching of
Dt 1-1 metals before
Metals rinsing. Shop activities, including
etching, metal plating and rinsing processes are done to strict customers specifications.
Since the etching activities are research oriented, they can generate multiple types of
spent aqueous solutions and rinse -water. This waste stream has mainly CWC 132 and
small quantities of wastes containing other CWCs depending on the particular process
and characteristic of the waste. The shops employ methods to extend the life of the
plating baths by rinsing between plating baths. However, once these baths no longer
meet specifications, the solutions are containerized and shipped off-site for treatment and
disposal at authorized facilities.
SOURCE REDUCTION/POLLUTION PREVENTION EVALUATION
Description of Measure:
LLNL plans to continue the existing source reduction measures and best management
practices. No other source reduction measures are planned at this time.
September 1, 2011 SB 14 Plan
17
