pretreatment system that is economical for SLAC metal finishing operations. Alternative <br />treatment technologies to reduce water usage can reduce usage of treatment chemicals, <br />but are not always reliable, due to the variable conditions that can occur in these <br />operations for the metal finishing work performed. <br />Description of Measure: <br />The opportunity of treating and reusing rinse water in a closed-loop water treatment <br />system is being reconsidered, but needs further investigation of technical and economic <br />feasibility. SLAC hired a consultant to look at the opportunity of reusing treated rinse <br />water. Some investigative work will have to be done to determine if a water recycling <br />system is economically feasible and sufficiently reliable to meet SLAC metal finishing <br />requirements. <br />The consultant provided some information on the use of a Reverse Osmosis (RO) <br />Resin and Deionization Resin (DI) System for treating rinse water and discharging the <br />RO reject water to the existing MFPF. The RO system needs to be properly sized and <br />specified for the mix of rinse water that is generated by MFO. The cost -benefit of the <br />RO system will have to be investigated more closely since only certain rinse waters <br />can be sent to the RO system based on the cleaning and plating baths used. A Dl <br />system also can be a candidate however the added waste stream, spent DI resins, needs <br />to be addressed in terms of costs and potential to recycle or treat on site. <br />Currently, a proposal has been submitted for funding of an RO system but further work <br />needs to be done to identify if there is sufficient retum-on-investment and system <br />sufficient system reliability for a highly varying activities of SLAC metal finishing <br />operations. <br />Rejected alternatives and rationale: <br />Additional countercurrent rinsing in SLAC metal finishing operations because of space <br />limitations and spray rinsing is not used because of ventilation issues and the potential <br />to fall short of cleaning requirements. <br />4.3 Debris with Non-RCRA Metals from Cleaning and Maintenance <br />Activities <br />Site 2010 quantit (Ib <br />SLAC 1,475 <br />FIGURE 111.4.3.
