THE FLEET MANAGEMENT AND HEAVY EQUIPMENT SHOP WASTE
GENERATION PROCESS
Fleet Management and Heavy Equipment Shop used/mixed oils generated in 2010 was
22,124 lbs, which is slightly higher than the 21,386 lbs generated in 2006 from the same
operations.
Laboratory services operations generated all ofthe used oils from fleet and facility
(electrical and mechanical equipments) maintenance operations. There are three different
locations that generate used oil. The location with the largest generation collects oil in a
1000 -gallon tank, and the two smaller collect their oil in drums. The collected used oil
from all locations is sent off-site for recycling or other useful purposes.
SOURCE REDUCTION/POLLUTION PREVENTION EVALUATION
Description of Measure:
LLNL plans to continue implementing its current best management practices in
handling, collecting, and disposing used oil. No other source reduction measures are
tanned at this point.
5.2 Maintenance nro_ram
Site_ 2010 uantit Ib
LBN1, 9,009
Raw DEquipment
Materials:
Oil
CWC 221 Wdisposal
Waste Oil
Mixed Oil
FIGURE 111.5.2. MAINTENANCE PROGRAM WASTE GENERATION PROCESS
This waste stream is generated throughout LBNL as a result of maintenance of equipment
such as heavy machinery, pumps, etc.
The generation of this waste stream has been reduced by more than 86% since 1994.
Source reduction measures already implemented include closing of the on-site motor
pool, purchase of oil -less pumps, installation of cyclone dewatering devices on some
tanks, and optimization of oil consolidation strategies at waste accumulation areas.
SOURCE REDUCTION/POLLUTION PREVENTION EVALUATION
Description of Measure:
LBNL will continue to search for strategies to further reduce this waste. No specific
source reduction measures are planned at this point, however, this plan will be revised if
feasible methods are identified as a result of the research.
September 1, 2011 S1314 Plan 36 September 1, 2011 SB 14 Plan 37
