SLAC will continue to upgrade to machines with more modern internal coolant <br />recycling systems. The other source reduction measures mentioned above will continue <br />to be used. No other source reduction measures are being considered at this time. <br />SLAC met with the staff from the Mechanical Fabrication and Klystron Departments, <br />the two areas that use machine coolants, to discuss the use of portable oil recycling <br />systems to filter, skim and recondition the coolant for Meuse in the machines. The <br />portable system would be periodically connected to a coolant collection vessel in the <br />machine and activated to process the oil. The portable system would be disconnected <br />when the machine is in use. OIL -WATER WASTE GENERATED FROM BUILDING MAINTENANCE AND <br />EQUIPMENT REPAIRS WASTE GENERATION PROCESS <br />Hazardous Waste and Process Description <br />High voltage electrical equipment is maintained by SLAC Power Conversion Group. <br />Some electrical equipment degrades over time such that water or moisture gets into the <br />dielectric fluid and has to be replaced. If the equipment is at the end of its useful life, it <br />may be removed from service and replaced with more reliable electrical equipment. <br />Equipment maintenance and removal is ongoing in which, where applicable, more <br />reliable equipment is purchased to reduce the frequency of replacement. <br />The oil -water waste generated from elevator pit repair has been an ongoing problem. Oil <br />from elevator equipment can mix with ground water that intrudes into the elevator shaft, <br />thus the oil -water waste that accumulates and has to be removed from time to time. <br />Hazardous Waste Management Approaches <br />Some oil -filled equipment may also be phased out due to ongoing changes in operational <br />needs as well as experimental needs. It is an ongoing activity to develop and use more <br />reliable equipment over time that significantly reduces the frequency of generating oil - <br />water waste. <br />SLAC Facilities has come up with an approach to prevent this problem and will be <br />installing some fixes to address this problem in the near future by collecting and returning <br />the oil to the same elevator equipment from which it came, this keeping the oil separated <br />from the intruding ground water. The ground water will be checked to see that it is oil - <br />free and discharged to the sanitary sewer.
