SLAC Power Conversion Group operates each piece of equipment to the end of its <br />service life. When technically and economically feasible, SLAC purchases or replaces <br />new equipment that is more reliable, durable, and requires less maintenance over its <br />useful life. BUILDING 914 MACHINE SHOP COOLANT/OIUWATER WASTE GENERATION <br />PROCESS <br />The Machine shop uses lathes, milling machines, drill presses, band saws, grinders, and <br />other equipment to produce classified and prototype parts in support of all on-going <br />projects at SNL. Certain machining tools require metal working fluid (coolant). The <br />Machine Shop also uses lubricating and hydraulic oils in machining processes. <br />During 2010 the Machine shop generated approximately 14,396 lbs of coolant solution <br />(90% water/10% coolant) contaminated with oil. In 2009 SNL management decided to <br />close the machine shop at SNL/New Mexico (NM). All of SNL machining work is now <br />conducted at SNUCA. In addition several pieces of equipment were brought from <br />SNUNM to SNUCA. The closure of the SNUNM Machine shop and their work being <br />brought to SNUCA is the reason for the increase in the generation of the wastestream <br />coolant/oil/water. <br />The waste stream is made up of 90% water and 10% coolant/oil. SNUCA will evaluate the <br />feasibility of purchasing an oil/water separator filter system to separate the coolantloil from <br />the water. The water would then be discharged to the POTW and the coolantloil would be <br />disposed of as hazardous waste. <br />Technical. Economic, Administrative Considerations <br />Expected Change in Hazardous Waste Generation: <br />To be determined.
