Economic Feasibility: Due to the SNUCA charge back system, it is likely that pollution <br />prevention opportunities will be economically feasible. SNLJCA will research the <br />feasibility of implementing suggested opportunities. <br />Effects on Product Quality: None. A separation unit is a safe and accepted method of <br />wastewater minimization. <br />Employee Health and Safety: No issues anticipated. FLEET MAINTENANCE CAR WASH STEAM CLEANING WASTE GENERATION <br />PROCESS <br />This waste results from car washes and cleaning of soiled vehicles and equipment. Itis <br />generated when oily sludge is removed from the oil/water separator at the Fleet <br />Maintenance building. Car washes and steam cleaning of vehicles and equipment <br />removes excess soils (oils, greases, particulates) prior to or after servicing. It supports <br />proper maintenance, clean working conditions and safe reuse of equipment. Also it <br />serves as a pollution prevention measure promoting decreased use of solvents as well as a <br />decreased soil load on the shop's aqueous parts cleaner. <br />Input to the oil/water separator comes from the carwash and steam cleaner. The separator <br />is pumped out approximately once every other year. There are no operational needs to <br />increase the frequency of putnp out, so this waste stream is expected to remain fairly <br />constant. <br />SOURCE REDUCTION/POLLUTION PREVENTION EVALUATION <br />Description of Measure: <br />LLNL employs best management practices such as segregation of fluid wastes to <br />promote recycling, utilizing drip pans and recycling fluids collected from vehicle <br />maintenance. Steam cleaning of vehicles promotes decreased use of solvents and a <br />reduced solid load on the aqueous parts cleaner.
