SCINTILLATION VIAL WASTE GENERATION PROCESS <br />The majority of this waste stream consists of scintillation fluid used in the detection of <br />radioactivity. The waste represented here are those wastes where no radioactivity is <br />detected. This waste stream is generated in the forms of: <br />• Scintillation vials containing small amounts of the ultima gold XR scintillation <br />fluid and wipes of surfaces suspected of containing radioisotopes. <br />The generation of this waste stream has been reduced by more than 63% since 1990. <br />The quantities of scintillation fluid wastes depend on the number of projects and use of <br />radioisotopes at any given time. <br />SOURCE REDUCTION/POLLUTION PREVENTION EVALUATION <br />Description of Measure: <br />No other source reduction measures are planned at this time. <br />September I, 2011 SB 14 Plan <br />54 <br />9. CONTAMINATED LABORATORY AND SHOP WASTE GENERATION PROCESS <br />This waste stream consists of kimwipes, paper towels, gloves, pipette tips, and plastics <br />contaminated with organic materials. <br />This waste stream formerly included pressure treated wood, a waste stream no longer <br />included within this report, since this fits within the exempted category: "Demolition <br />waste/ major renovation waste". <br />SOURCE REDUCTION/POLLUTION PREVENTION EVALUA <br />Description of Measure: <br />LBNL will continue to search for strategies to reduce this waste. LBNL will educate <br />researchers to minimize producing trash contaminated with hazardous materials, and <br />segregating non -hazardous trash from contaminated trash as much as feasible.
