In 2010, the largest <br />generators of solvent debris were the Materials Science Department, the Systems Biology <br />Department and the Maintenance Engineering Department. <br />The Material Chemistry Department designs and evaluates special polymer media. These <br />research activities generated 245 lbs of solvent contaminated debris, which includes <br />solvent contaminated tips, gloves, PPE and wipes. <br />The Systems Biology Department conducts research in molecular biology, and <br />culture and analysis of environmental samples, including microbial and fungal <br />species. Metabolic, genomic, and proteomic analyses are also conducted. These <br />research activities generated 159 lbs of solvent contaminated debris, which includes <br />solvent contaminated tips, gloves, PPE and wipes. <br />The Project Engineering and Operations Department is responsible for overseeing the <br />painting activities at SNUCA. These painting activities generated 126 lbs of solvent <br />contaminated debris, which included paint rollers, brushes, edging, drop cloths, and rags. <br />The remaining solvent debris was small volumes of solvent contaminated tips, gloves, <br />PPE and wipes generated at various labs throughout the site. <br />SOURCE REDUCTION/POLLUTION PREVENTION EVALUATION <br />Description of Measure: <br />In April 2009 the SNUCA site management decided to close the Paint shop and <br />outsource all required painting activities. The closure of the Paint Shop has resulted in <br />the reduction of solvent contaminated debris generation in 2010 at SNUCA. The <br />majority of painting currently conducted onsite is for renovation work or new <br />construction. <br />The Pollution Prevention staff review Standard Operating Procedures for activities <br />conducted onsite. This allows feedback to be provided to researchers on possible waste <br />reduction opportunities. No source reduction/pollution prevention measures have been <br />identified for solvent contaminated debris generated in research activities. <br />September 1, 2011 SB 14 Plan 56 September 1, 2011 SB 14 Plan 57 <br />
