Whenever laboratories are cleaned out during laboratory relocations <br />or researcher departure, there is an increase in the generation of this waste stream. <br />During 2010 there were many laboratory moves to accommodate building renovation <br />efforts and for the consolidation of programmatic personnel under one roof. A very <br />small percentage of these discarded chemicals were acutely hazardous. The <br />chemicals used represent those passed on from previous researchers, those no longer <br />needed for current research directions, house cleaning activities preceding a <br />laboratory move or the result of the closure of laboratory space. <br />SOURCE REDUCTION/POLLUTION PREVENTION EVALUATION <br />Description of Measure: <br />LBNL will continue to educate researchers and operations personnel on purchases of <br />only those chemicals needed for current research, and will continue to encourage <br />researchers to substitute chemicals that are less hazardous whenever possible. <br />6. The MFO Group performs a variety of activities to meet demanding and <br />sometimes unique metal finishing specifications in order to fabricate equipment for high- <br />voltage electrical equipment. The use of cyanide plating baths is essential for successful <br />fabrication of parts used in various experimental applications. CWC 711 waste in the <br />form of spent cyanide bath is reduced by extending the life of such baths using analytical <br />monitoring techniques. <br />Hazardous Waste Approaches <br />During the last 4 years, SLAC commissioned a third -party review of its cyanide plating <br />operations and the potential for using alternative copper plating technology.
