OSIRTD
pdn Reg)onasi "transit. 01strirt
• Major Category A Waste: Source reduction strategiies/measures
for the Oil, Water and Sludge from the Steam room and the bus
wash: The following source reduction/minimization strategies will be
pursued in order to minimize the generation of oil, water and sludge
waste from the steam room and the bus wash:
Management and Operational Control: The SJRTD's oil/water
separator will be inspected and maintained more frequently in order
to eliminate any plugging or clogging conditions, hence eliminating
the need for pumping excess water along with oil and sludge_ This
source reduction strategy shall eliminate or reduce the quantity of
water that is pumped from the oil/water separator, hence reducing
the amount of hazardous waste pumped by the contractor. In
addition, the SJRTD's WM team shall ensure that any
clarified/standing water inside the oil/water separator is first
pumped to the sanitary sewer before the oil/water separator is
cleaned and serviced by the outside contractor. This source
reduction strategy shall further eliminate or reduce the quantity of
water that is pumped from the oil/wafer separator, hence, reducing
the total amount of hazardous waste pumped by the contractor.
Administrative controls: The SJRTD has already begun a multi-
media/one-stop environmental compliance education and
empowerment program for its employees. During these
educational workshops, the importance and criticality of proper and
timely cleaning and maintenance of the oil/water separator will be
presented to the SJRTD's employees and management staff.
31
