Groundwater Assessment Plan catments (cont'd) <br /> Page # Ca[ment <br /> 66 The last paragraph discusses the steam cleaning of drilling <br /> equipment and the collection of rinsate in a plastic-lined <br /> bermed basin. Based on the description provided, this sounds <br /> acceptable for the cleaning of drill rods, bits, tube samplers, <br /> etc. , but not for heavy equipment. For such equipment, a <br /> substantial wash pad would need to be constructes3, potentially <br /> of concrete or canpacted earthen materials. This unit would <br /> also have to be bermed, lined and equiped with a sump or <br /> collection area. <br /> 69 The first paragraph indicates that during aquifer testing, <br /> the -well will be pumped for a minimum of 4 hours. What is <br /> the basis fon using this minimum time period? <br /> 69 The last sentence should also state that the submersible pump will <br /> be positioned such that its intake is above the well screen, in <br /> order to avoid stressing the formation adjacent to the screen. <br /> 74 Although the last paragraph states that pH meters will be calibrated <br /> after each use, it should also mention the three pH standards <br /> that will be used in this calibration. <br /> 75 It is unclear why, in Section 5.4.4, the groundwater analysis <br /> of the pump water sample is being caMared to an analysis fran <br /> a different well for confirmation. If the purpose of this <br /> sampling is to evaluate the extent of contamination of the pump <br /> water fon disposal purposes, it would seem more appropriate to <br /> take a duplicate sample. <br /> 77 Section 5.5.3 proposes that wells SMW-5 and SMW-6 be sampled fon <br /> Appendix 9 analyses. As indicated previously, the selection of <br /> these wells is problematic. <br /> 79 In addition to evacuating 3-5 well volumes, the first paragraph <br /> should state that stabilization of pH, EC and temperature will <br /> be achieved before sampling. <br /> 95 The first paragraph indicates that CWS pumpage records will be <br /> obtained on a "regular basis". Since water level measurements <br /> will be made monthly during the initial evaluation of ground- <br /> water flow, it would be prudent to also obtain CWS pumpage <br /> records at least as frequently. <br /> 95 Section 5.7.1 should state under what conditions an electric <br /> sounder could not be used. <br /> 99 It is unclear why only one of the two water level measurements <br /> is to be used, instead of averaging the two data points. <br />
