0
E
- 3 -
1.0 PERSONNEL PROTECTION
1.1 Anticipated Levels of Protection
0
The hazards anticipated to be present during the soil excavation
and sample collection tasks require very limited levels of
protection. EPA Level D protective clothing will be worn by all
field personnel during on-site activities. If the site conditions
warrant, the level of protection will be escalated to EPA Level C.
The On -Site Safety Coordinator will be responsible for determining
the appropriate level of personal protection to be used. Based upon
the present and historic knowledge of the site, Levels A and B
protection will not be required for the operations detailed in this
work plan.
1.2 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
The equipment necessary for each level of protection is detailed
below.
Level D:
Level D protection will consist of the "basic work uniform":
Hard Hat
• Safety Glasses with Protective Sideshields
Steel -toed, Steel -shank Chemical Resistant Boots
Coveralls
Latex or Vinyl Surgical -Type Gloves
Level C:
The Level C protective equipment ensemble is equivalent to Level
D with the exception that the respirator and Tyve coveralls will be
worn. The specific PPE required for each level of protection may be
modified in response to the actual site conditions encountered. The
On -Site Coordinator shall notify Lambert Construction/Environmental
Health and Safety officer and the Project Director prior to
implementing any modifications of PPE of levels of protection.
1.3 Contaminant Monitoring
An initial site reconnaissance will be performed prior to
commencement of each field excursion. A field excursion is defined
as each mobilization of field workers into the exclusion zone.
additionally, the site will be monitored under the supervision of the
On -Site Safety Coordinator during the course of work operations. As
the primary hazard from the known contaminants at this site is by
inhalation of contaminated dust and direct contact with contaminated
soil the objective of this monitoring is to assess the adequacy of
personal protective equipment, to protect personnel and the public
from possible releases of toxic or hazardous substances, and to
• provide rational for the selected or modification of the level of
protection used on the site.
