[a TEREX
Safe Operating Procedure
Puncturing of Aerosol Cans
Equipment
1.
AeroVent Standard Can Recycling Unit (See Product Manual for full list of parts)
55 gallon drum
2.
PPE
1. Safety Glasses
2. Face Shield
3. Nitrile Gloves
Safety Precautions
1.
Do not use unless you have been properly trained to operate unit. This includes reading and
understanding the product manual.
2.
Always refer to the SDS for specific chemical handling and safety instructions prior to puncturing
aerosolcan.
3.
Keep waste collection containers away from heat, spark and flame as vapors can be highly
flammable.
4.
No smoking near the unit or waste containers.
5.
Ensure the unit grounding cable is attached to a suitable grounding source prior to operation.
6.
Keep container closed when not in use.
7.
Store and operate only in a well ventilated area away from ignition sources.
8.
If unit is being used for more than one type of aerosol can, refer to SDS's to ensure compatibility.
Caustics, pesticides, insecticides and white metals must be segregated from other liquids.
9.
Do not use unit for draining expanding sealant aerosols or spray adhesives products.
10.
Always use correct plunger block for the diameter of the can you are draining.
Operating Instructions
1.
Using the can guide on the side of the unit, select the matching plunger block. (2", 2.5" or 3")
2.
Lift the operating handle to release clamp and open the AeroVent lid.
3.
Can stop should be in slots at the front of the trough liner.
4.
Insert 1 aerosol can with the bottom of the can pointing towards the clamp and up against the
forward stop.
Close the lid. Operate by pushing down on the operating handle. (The clamp will engage the lid
and push the lid down.)
5.
6.
Push down until the operating clamp "locks" in to place. The aerosol can has now been punctured.
7.
Wait 15 — 30 seconds for can to drain. NOTE: If a can is mostly full, leave the handle in the locked
position for 45 — 60 seconds to ensure can if fully drained.
8.
When can is completely drained, lift the handle into the "unload" position and open the lid to
remove can.
9.
Close unit when finished.
Waste Management Practices
1.
The aerosol liquid waste resulting from the puncturing of the aerosol can is a hazardous waste and
characterized as a flammable waste (D001), containing Benzene (D018) and MEK (D035).
2.
When fully drained, the punctured aerosol can is considered an empty container and no longer
regulated UNLESS the aerosol can held an acute or extremely hazardous waste. NOTE: All new
aerosols must be approved by the HSE team. This ensures compliance with this item and waste
compatibility.
