Viktron California
Slug and Spill Control Plan
(12-23-96)
Description of discharge practices, including non -routine batch discharges.
Viktron California discharges treated waste on a 24 hour a day basis Monday through Friday.
Our typical discharge is 180,000 gallons a day. Our discharge is monitored by analysis at least 1
time per 8 hour shift and our discharge is composited using an Isco refrigerated composite
sampler. We have employees dedicated to the waste treatment area. Our effluent consists of
treated waste water from metal plating operations and spent process baths that have been treated
to meet discharge requirements.
Description of stored chemicals.
We store acids, caustics, oxidizers, flammables, and a limited amount of organic solvents. All
hazardous materials and wastes are stored in areas that are covered, contained by concrete floors
and berms that have been coated with epoxy.
Procedures for immediately notifying the POTW of slug discharges.
If a slug incident develops the waste treatment operator will immediately contact the waste
treatment area supervisor who will report the incident to the Municipal Utilities Department,
Environmental Control Division, or the sanitary sewer emergency number, if environmental
control is not available.
Procedures to prevent adverse impact from accidental spills.
All of the process areas and chemical storage areas are in covered areas, contained by concrete
floors and berms that have been coated with epoxy. Any spills from process baths, raw
chemistry, or transportable containers can be rinsed to the trenches, which lead into the waste
water treatment area. All of the bulk storage tanks at Viktron California are in secondary
containment areas, that are within the berms. The delivery area for bulk chemicals is contained
and has a concrete sump. If a leak occurs during delivery of a transportable container containing
a hazardous material or while transporting these materials to or from the chemical storage area
the spilled material will be contained and picked up with an absorbent and the area neutralized.
Any spills of solids or powders will be picked up and disposed of in an appropriate fashion.
Inspection and maintenance of storage areas.
Our chemical storage areas are inspected on a daily basis and a log is kept.
