Unified JUL 2 8 2014 <br />Distribution CeiR®1IPAL H <br />DEPARTMENT <br />OVERVIEW - AMMONIA LEAK <br />Ammonia is the chemical refrigerant used in our refrigeration system. Ammonia is <br />relatively safe because it is water-soluble and its strong odor serves as a built in safety <br />alarm. Unless physically incapacitated and not able to move, the warning <br />properties of ammonia make it impossible to remain in the area of an ammonia <br />leak. <br />As noted, because of the strong odor of ammonia, it is "self alarming". The fact that you <br />smell ammonia does not necessarily mean that there is an emergency. If you smell <br />ammonia you should report the incident to your supervisor. <br />Depending on the specific circumstances of a major leak, the ammonia could be in the <br />form of a vapor cloud or liquid ammonia; both forms of ammonia must be avoided. If <br />a situation arose that resulted in a major ammonia leak your responsibility is to <br />immediately evacuate the area and notify your supervisor. If your path to the closest <br />exit is blocked by either a vapor cloud or liquid ammonia, you are to use a different exit. <br />Procedures to follow in the event of a major leak <br />Announce over the PA system to evacuate or shelter in place (will ring multiple times, <br />be patient) <br />call 1722 (page FF/DELI) <br />call 1721 (page DRY) <br />call 1730 (building D ) <br />Call the Fire Department - 911 <br />Notify Warehouse Management <br />Contact the 3E Company 800-451-8346, (see procedures listed on page 14). <br />Notify gate 1- call 7404 / gate 2 call 7492 <br />After authorized by the fire department, shut off power — kill switch access at the <br />outside of each compressor room <br />Perform roll call as soon as possible <br />Provide names of personnel not accounted for to the fire department <br />01-14-13 10 <br />
