"111111111ws *W01
Mr.Jeffrey Wong am
San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department
25 March 2011
Distribution Center•Stockton
OVERVIEW
AMMONIA LEAK
Ammonia is the chemical re'rgerant used in our refrigeration system Ammon!a is
relatively safe because it is ~water-soluble and its strong odor serves as a built in safety
alarm. Unless physically incapacitated and not able to move, the warning
properties of ammonia make it impossible to remain in the area of an ammonia
leak.
As noted because of the strong odor of ammonia, it is "self alarming" The fact that you
smell ammonia does not necessarily mean that there is an emergency. If you smell
ammonia you slsould reporl the incident to your supervisor
Depending or the specific circumstances of a major leak, the ammonia could be in the
form of a vapor cloud or liquid ammonia: both farms of ammonia must be avoided. If
a situation arose that resulted in a major ammonia leak your responsibeNty is to
immediately evacuate the area and notify your supervisor. If your path to the closest exit
is blocked by either a vapor cloud or liquid ammonia, you are to use a different exit.
Procedures to follow in the event of a ma or leak
Announce over the Pim system to evacuate or shelter in place
call 742(page FFlDELI)
call 741 (page DRY)
calf 740 (page fDRY.FI?DELI i
Gall the Fire Department-911
Contact the 3E Company 800-461-6346 (see procedures listed on page 14,1
Nolity Guard Station -call 8504
Notify Warehouse tvlanagement.
Atter authorized by the Fare Department, shLA off power-kill switch access at the
outside of each compressor room.
Perform roll call as soon as passible
Provide narnes of personnel not accounted for to the fire department.
Any rescue attempt should be done by trained personnel only.
a2rzo n
OPE
• •
