4. WEEKLY INSPECTIONS OF WASTE STORAGE AREAS
The weekly inspection of waste storage areas form is attached. If there are any"NO" answers in the
comments section of the form, it must be reviewed and resolved with your immediate supervisor. File
completed inspection forms in File#3130 (Hazardous Waste Area Inspection Forms).
5. LABELING
Assistance, including provision of required labels, will be supplied by the hazardous waste
management contractor. The hazardous waste management contractor's"Waste Handling Manual"
has procedures that explain how the label must be completed individual responsible for managing the
waste stream.
6. MAINTAINING GENERATOR STATUS
You are classified as a:
LARGE QUANTITY GENERATOR (LQG)
You are a LQG if you generate in one month more than 2,200 pounds (1000 kilograms) of hazardous
waste. If you go can maintain a monthly generation rate of under 2,200 pounds for an entire year, you
can become a Small Quantity Generator(SQG) and have less regulatory requirements to meet. If you
stay under 220 pounds for the entire year you become a Conditionally Exempt Small Quantity
Generator(CESQG) and have even less regulatory requirements to meet. Work towards becoming a
CESQG.
• EXAMPLE 1 -- If you had a spill of 178 gallons of 50% liquid caustic waste(at 12.42 lbs./gal.
density), it would weigh approximately 2,210 lbs. and meet the definition of LQG (generates
more than 2,200 pounds of hazardous waste in any one month period. ACTION—
Minimize/manage any spills of 50% liquid caustic to 177 gallons (2,198 pounds)or less per
month(the goal is don't have any spills). Try and reuse/recycle any spilled caustic to keep the
spill under 177 gallons or less per month.
If you continue to generate more than 2,220 pounds of hazardous waste per month, then you continue
to maintain your LQG classification. The goal is to generate no hazardous waste, or as little as
possible allowing you to move downward in hazardous waste generator classifications and have less
regulatory requirements to meet. Contact your CEM assigned to your facility for help in moving
downward in hazardous waste generator classification!
7. WASTE MANAGEMENT OPTIONS
Simply remember that the less hazardous waste you generate in any given month, the less hazardous
waste rules, regulations and laws you have to contend with. Therefore your first option for managing a
hazardous waste stream should be avoid generating it. If you generate no hazardous waste, make sure
you review your waste streams at least annually to document that the waste streams do not exhibit any
hazardous characteristics. If you cannot eliminate a hazardous waste stream, you should try to reuse it,
provide it to another company as a raw material (accepted in all but a few states), or recycle it. If none
of these options are possible, it will be necessary to have a TIN approved hazardous waste
management contractor dispose of the hazardous waste.
E10a - 2
