Oil Filters — Drain all oil filters of used oil (used oil goes into used oil waste container) and place in appropriate sized container (depending upon the amount of oil filters generated). Oil filters, once drained for 24 hours are usually allowed to be disposed in plant trash. Heritage also handles oil filters as a non-hazardous waste and crushes the filters collected; recycling the accumulated used oil and recycling the resulting metal filters. Label your waste container appropriately (Refer to labeling section of the Heritage Waste Handling Manual available online on Heritage website). Spent Parts Washer Solvent Fluid— Parts washer solvent: All facilities must use Heritage for their parts washer solvent and/or Parts Washer service. Also approved are Heritage/Crystal Clean and MiraChem in California (a Heritage third party vendor). The only other exception is the ZEP Parts washer units at many former Gaylord facilities, which have no spent fluid due to an ultra filtration system. See ZEP info below. Normally Parts Washer fluid is considered a"spent" raw material that qualifies for use/reuse in 32 states (exclusion as a waste and therefore exempt from waste manifesting requirements. States that still must consider the spent solventloil as a waste stream include California, Georgia, Massachusetts, Minnesota, and Puerto Rico (U.S. Territory). In all other states, Crystal Clean and/or Heritage will collect the spent solvent for use as a raw product in roofing materials manufacturing. Crystal Clean and/or Heritage will advise each site how to store, handle, and ship spent solvent. ZEP Parts Washers: Facilities should switch to a Heritage provided solvent for use in the ZEP units. As there is no spent solvent in ZEP units, there normally isn't a spent solvent waste stream. There are usually two filters that must be tested to determine how they are disposed of. Contact your Corrugated Packaging Environmental Affairs representative for assistance in dealing with any spent solvent that many result from ZEP part washer usage and how to deal with the filters. Contact your Heritage Customer Service Representative for guidance and assistance in determining a replacement solvent for ZEP solvent. 5. Solvent Coated Rags — All used/contaminated fabric shop rags/towels that contain solvents AND oils or greases must be placed in separate appropriate containers and labeled accordingly. Shop rags/towels containing only oil are handled as oily debris — see above. In some cases, solvent rags/shop towels are considered and handled as non-hazardous waste if a laundry service picks up and returns them. In not using a laundry Heritage will handle this hazardous waste stream by solid fuels blending. If you generate a significant amount of solvent rages/shop towels waste and don't use a laundry service, you should consider using a laundry service to provide shop rags/towels that can be laundered and returned for re-use. This is a recycling opportunity that can significantly reduce/eliminate your solvent rag/shop towel waste stream amounts and costs.
