J
Inhalation of chemicals will be minimized by the use of respirators whenever significant
concentrations of airborne chemicals are detected. Air purifying respirators with cartridges
approved for use against organic vapors shall be utilized when needed, and filter attachments
for use against airborne particulates (dust) shall also be available. The need for respirators
will be determined by the project CIH, based on air monitoring data collected by either a
photoionization detector (PID) or standard industrial hygiene technique. Industrial hygiene
sampling results will be compared to either the ACGIH Threshold Limit Value (TLV) or the
OSHA Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL), whichever is more restrictive.
3.4.2.7 Site Specific Chemical Hazards
Gasoline vapor is a central nervous system depressant. The TLV for gasoline is 300 ppm.
Specific chemicals of concern and their characteristics include:
Chemical
PEL
TLV
Odor Threshold
Ionization
Constituent
(npm)
(nnm)
(pnm)
Potentials (Ev)
Benzene
1
10
4.7
9.25
Toluene
100
100
2.9
8,82
Ethylbenzene
100
100
2.3
8,76
Xylene
100
100
1.1
8.45
Symptoms of short term benzene exposure include headaches, dizziness, drowsiness and
nausea which may progress to convulsions and death at high vapor concentrations. Benzene
is a known human carcinogen. Symptoms of short term toluene exposure include headaches,
dizziness, fatigue, muscular weakness, drowsiness, and incoordination. Symptoms of
ethylbenzene include irritation of the eyes, nose, throat, and skin. Short term exposure to
xylene can cause dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite and
unconsciousness.
Lead is also a central nervous system depressant. The TLV for lead is 50 microgram per
cubic meter. Lead can effect the nervous system, the blood forming system, the digestive
system, the kidneys and the reproductive system. Nervous system effects include: fatigue,
headache, irritability, sleep disorders, anxiety, slowed reaction time and hearing difficulties.
M7/07-07-92/EES/ENG/2054r 3.6
