J
Lead can also effect the ability to perform fine movements, can cause decreases in hand grip
strength, and weakness in ankles and wrists.
Long term exposure to lead can impair the body's ability to form blood cells and carry
oxygen, and can cause permanent damage to the kidneys. Lead overexposure can cause
painful stomach and intestinal disorders including colic and diarrhea. Elevated levels of lead
in the body can cause loss of sex drive, infertility, impotence in men, and birth defects for
pregnant women. Elemental lead and lead oxide is not absorbed through the skin, and will
not cause skin irritation. Lead dust can cause mild eye irritation; in the same manner as other
fine dust particles.
3.5 Accident Prevention
Accidents shall be prevented by planning during safety meeting (Section 3.15.1), site
monitoring by the health and safety coordinator, and regular management safety audits
conducted by the project manager and business unit management.
3.6 Training
All IT personnel will, at a minimum have completed 40 hours of health and safety training
and a current 8 hour refresher for hazardous waste work as required in 29 CFR 1910.120
Final Rule. At least one person on site at all times during site operations will have a current
fust aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification. The CPR certification must
be refreshed annually and first aid certification must be renewed every three years. Written
certification of the initial, supervisory, first aid/CPR, and refresher training, as applicable will
be available on site whenever work is being performed.
All IT personnel who are subject to exposure to lead shall complete lead training in
accordance with 29 CFR 1910.1025. The lead training will include, as a minimum, the
following:
a) Information on the content of the OSHA (29 CFR 1910.1025) standard.
b) The specific nature of the operations which could result in exposure to lead above
the action level.
c) The purpose, proper selection, fitting, use, and limitations of respirators applicable
to lead work.
MZ/07-07-92/EES/ENG/2054r 3-7
