All work will comply with all applicable OSHA and Construction Industry Safety Orders and
USACE Safety and Health requirements manual EM -385-1-1 revised October, 1987. If the
equipment should require onsite maintenance, 29 CFR 1910.147 lockout/tagout procedures,
dated September 1, 1989 will be followed. The following illustrates some of the more
pertinent concerns.
3.13.2 Sanitation
Potable water will be available near each work area. During the soil sampling, water will be
clearly marked and stored in clean, insulated, one -gallon water cooler or its equivalent.
Single use paper cups will be available adjacent to the cooler. Cups will be disposed of in
plastic trash bags. Vaned work activities may be in progress concurrently at more than one
site. The location of the nearest toilet will be provided each morning at the Tailgate Safety
meeting.
3.13.3 Breaks
All breaks must be taken in shaded, clean areas. Employees shall wash their hands and faces
with soap and water and go to an appropriate break area. Employees are encouraged to drink
plenty of fluids during breaks.
3.13.4 Health and Safety Work Precautions
A Tailgate Safety meeting will be conducted at the beginning of each shift, when new
personnel arrive, or when a unique work assignment warrants employee indoctrination and
training. Tailgate safety meetings will be conducted by the SSHO.
3.13.5 Heat Stress Control/Prevention Measures
The wearing of PPE in warm environments may create a heat stress potential. The following
control measures can be used to help control heat stress and are mandatory if heat stress is
detected by elevated heart rate above 110 beats per minute.
• Provision of adequate liquids to replace lost body fluids. Employees must
replace water and salt lost from sweating. Employees must be encouraged to
drink more than the amount required to satisfy thirst. Fresh water will be
available for use as necessary. Employees will be encouraged to slightly
increase their sodium intake, unless medically restricted. On site drinking water
will be kept cool (50 - 60 °F) to encourage personnel to drink often.
MZ/07-07-92/EES/ENG/2054r 3-20
