Site Safety Plan for Excavation Activities April 8, 1996
Military Department OMS#24-Stockton
Hearing Protection:
• Hearing protection shall be worn when noise levels prevents conversation in a normal
voice at a distance of three feet.
• Hearing protection used at the site shall be NIOSH/OSHA approved.
• If soft ear plugs are used, they shall be replaced when dirty, or cleaned with and
antibacterial wash and reused.
Thermal stress- heat:
Although heat stress is not expected to be a hazard when working at these sites because of
the time of year, if low-permeability protective clothing is required and the
temperature are above 70 to 75 Fahrenheit, heat stress could be a problem. The
following recommendations mat reduce head stress:
• Drink plenty of fluids
• Wear cotton undergarments to act as a wick to absorb moisture
• Make adequate shelter available for taking rest breaks to cool off.
• Wear cooling devices to aid in ventilation (the additional weight may affect efficiency)
• Install portable showers or hose down facilities to cool clothing and body.
• Shift working hours to early morning and evening, avoiding the hottest time of the
day.
• Rotate crews wearing the protective clothing.
8
