Mr. Mike Souza
Groundwater samples collected from the excavation also had a strong petroleum hydrocarbon odor; however, no
sheen was observed on the samples collected or on the groundwater present within the excavation. The excavation
was subsequently filled to approximately two feet below ground surface with pea gravel by Thorpe and secured with
portable fencing.
Observations of tank condition are recorded in the Tank Removal Soil Sampling Report included as
Attachment A to this letter. The tanks were transported by Thorpe under Bill of Lading to Schnitzer Steel in
Rancho Cordova, California. Wastewater generated during rinsing of the USTs was removed and transported
by American Valley Waste Oil (CAL 00827878 under hazardous waste manifests 20958403 and 20958419 for
disposal.
Under the direction of PHS/EHD personnel, two soil samples were collected beneath the western and eastern ends of
each respective tank at depths of approximately 12 feet below grade. One groundwater sample was collected below
the center of each tank, and four discrete soil samples were collected from the soil stockpile. Soil and groundwater
sample locations are shown on the site sketch in Attachment A.
The samples were placed into an ice chest cooled to a temperature of approximately four degrees centigrade and
transported under chain of custody to Argon Laboratory (FLAP 2359) for analysis. Analysis for each sample
consisted of total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPHg) and total petroleum hydrocarbons as diesel (TPHd) by
EPA method 8015 modified; benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) by EPA method 8020, gasoline
oxygenates by EPA method 8260, and total lead by EPA method 6010. Analytical results are summarized in Table
1, Attachment A. Laboratory data sheets and chain of custody documentation are included in Attachment B. Load
tickets for fill material, and documentation of UST and wastewater disposition will be forwarded under separate
cover by Thorpe.
Please call John Lane or Sean Garvey at (209) 838-9888 if you have any questions or require additional information.
Respectfully,
Ground Zero Analysis, Inc.
Sean Garvey
Staff Geologist
Attachments
cc: Pat Riddle
Marty Thorpe
O:\I> m\cROUNDZEITHORPE\SSouza\Tank pull m.dw
