AROMATIC PETROLEUM DISTILLATES:
COMPOUNDS TLV
Benzene 10 ppm
Toluene 100 ppm
Xylene 100 ppm
Ethyl Benzene 100 ppm
These chemicals are found in varying concentration of
gasoline. They are colorless liquids with strong aromatic
petroleum hydrocarbon-like odors . They are all flammable
and moderately volatile. Their vapors are heavier than air
and have low solubility in water.
The anticipated level of these chemicals detected at the
Heintz Facility are considered low enough not to pose a
potential threat.
E. ) Action Levels:
Chemical : If any of the symptoms listed above are
encountered, evacuate the area and notify the Site
Safety Officer. He/She will determine the proper
action to be taken.
Explosion: If the LEL reading from the Gastech is over
20% for petroleum hydrocarbons or 10% for oxygen, the
tank will not be removed from the excavation.
F. ) Air/Environmental Monitoring:
Because the tank has no history of leakage and no soil
contamination is expected, the only air monitoring that
will be performed will be performed with the LEL meter.
The tank bungs will be kept closed except for the vent
lines which will remain open during the vapor freeing
process . All tank vapors will be vented to a minimum
of 12' feet above grade and 3 feet above the roof of the
existing buildings .
G. ) Confined Space Entry:
This plan does not cover entry into any confined
spaces.
