6.2 Heavy Equipment
Potential hazardous conditions and the appropriate responses concerning heavy equipment include
but are not limited to:
Q Power Lines - When operating heavy equipment, such as cranes, near power lines, care
will be taken to ensure that the crane boom or rigging always maintains a distance of at
least 10 feet from the power lines.
o Underground utilities will be located and disconnected, shut off, or blanked prior to any
excavation work.
o Swing Radius - All swing equipment, such as cranes or backhoe, will have the swing
radius guarded to prevent employees from being struck by the rotating machinery.
o Electrical Equipment - All electrical equipment will be properly grounded and class
approved for the location. Ground fault interrupter devices or a daily monitored
grounding program will be used.
o Hoses and Associated Tank Lines - These pieces of equipment present trip and fall
hazards to workers. Hoses/lines should be marked so that they are clearly visible to all
workers. Avoid moving full hoses, if possible, as this more often than not results in a
back injury.
o Machine Guarding - All machinery on site will be properly guarded to prevent contact
with rotating shifts, blades, gears, or in-running nip points.
4
