6.1 General
The following general practices will be observed at the project site:
o Tools - Manipulation of hand held tools will be done with caution to avoid catching
fingers or dropping on feet.
o Pumps - If pumps are fueled electronically, they will be properly grounded and class
approved for the site. Ground fault interrupter devices or a daily monitored grounding
program will be used. The machines will be properlyue arded to prevent contact with
possible injurious parts.
o Flammable Materials -When working with flammable materials, adequate ventilation and
control of all ignition sources will be maintained. This may include:
Non-sparking tools
Explosion-proof equipment (intrinsically safe)
Class-approved electrical equipment
Grounding and bonding of static electricity sources
No smoking or open lights
No welding
o For tank pulling, the Lower Explosive Level (LEL) must be below 10%. For cutting with
non-heat producing tool, the LEL must be below 8%. For cutting with a torch, the LEL
must be below 2%.
o Shoring/Sloping - All excavations more than 5 feet in depth that require entry by
personnel will be shored or have their sides sloped at a 2:1 ratio. DES does not
anticipate excavation entry will be necessary as sampling will be accomplished with a
backhoe. Shoring and/or sloping needs will be determined by the Project Manager.
3
