23 March 2004
AGE-NC Project No. 03-1055
On 20 October 2003,prior to the start of excavation and with concurrence of Mr. Michael Infurna
of the EHD, AGE determined that MW-2, located at the western edge of the site, should be
abandoned and replaced at a future date;however, prior to AGE's intended removal of well MW-2,
the western wall of the excavation collapsed and destroyed the well. The well casing was removed
from the excavation and stored on plastic for later disposal.
2.2. EXCAVATION OF HYDROCARBON-IMPACTED SOIL
On 20 and 21 October 2003,approximately 300 cubic yards of petroleum hydrocarbon-impacted soil
was excavated from the southwest portion of the site(Figure 2); on 10, 11, and 12 November 2003
an additional 370 cubic yards of petroleum hydrocarbon-impacted soil was excavated north of the
initial excavation. The excavation was performed by Precision Excavating and Drilling using a skip
loader and an excavator. Excavated soil was field screened for the presence of organic vapor using
an organic vapor meter (OVM) equipped with a photo-ionization detector (PID: Thermo
Environmental 58013, 10.0 eV, calibrated to isobutylene). Impacted soil removed from the
excavations was identified and segregated based on OVM readings and field observations.Excavated
soil was stockpiled on-site for transportation and final disposal.
2.2.1. Additional UST Removal
On 21 October 2003 a 500-gallon UST was discovered, on the western excavation wall, during
excavation activities at the site. Due to the inadvertent removal of the tank by the excavator during
excavation activities, the UST was stored on site and EHD was notified. The 500-gallon UST was
removed by Valued Engineering hnc. on 05 November 2003 under EHD permit.
2.3. EXCAVATION SAMPLE COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS
On 05 November 2003, AGE personnel collected four soil samples (UST-1 through UST-4) from
beneath the floor area ofthe additional 500-gallon UST,six stockpile soil samples(STCK-1 through
STCK-6), and one grab ground water sample from standing water in the excavation pit(Figure 2).
On 12 and 13 November 2003,AGE personnel collected five soil samples(EXC-1 through EXC-5)
from the side walls of the excavation and twelve stockpile soil samples(STCK-7 through STCK-12).
The soil and ground water samples were collected at the direction of EHD representatives.
Excavation soil samples were collected from the excavator bucket by hand-packing a two-inch
diameter,3-inch long brass sleeve;stockpiled soil samples were collected by digging approximately
1-foot into the soil and then hand-packing the sample. Upon collection, the exposed ends of the
... Advanced GeoEnvironmental,Inc.
