inspect exclusion zone (the area where you are going to
excavate, where you suspect contamination, either "on-site" or
oft) for spark sources, paying careful attention to electrical
equipment. Do not start excavation or boring work until all
possible sources of ignition have been removed. Secure the area
to prevent the public from approaching within 25 feet of any
sampling, digging, or drilling.
Site Personnel are required to wear/carry the following personal protective equipment
and emergency materials:
Tyvek or cotton outer garments - if cotton outer garments are
worn, they must be washed separately from normal household
laundry prior to re -wearing. if cotton is selected, the use of
overalls is preferred.
Neoprene or leather steel toelshank boots - (if leather boots are
worn, disposable booties should be worn as an over boot.)
Hard hat with safety goggles or glasses with side shields.
Neoprene, nitrile, or polyvinyl alcohol outer gloves over surgical
gloves. Worker should select the glove type that allows
optimum dexterity for safe operations of their equipment.
First aid kit, eye wash kit, A,B,C 2 -LB fire extinguisher, and
monitoring equipment including OVM with 10.0 eV lamp.
Position equipment and contractor(s) upwind of the area to be
excavated, and up -gradient of the drilling site. Keep out of low
areas.
"Natural background" OVM readings will be collected in areas
not suspected to contain elevated levels/concentration of
contaminants (i.e. clean areas). The instrument is to run
continuously, or is to be set on standby mode. Readings will be
collected from the breathing zone upon initiating site work. For
an up -grade to be warranted, readings in the breathing zone
must persist for a significant period of time, i.e., 5 to 10 minutes.
This is a judgment call. Spikes on the OVM above the action
level call for an up -grade.
CAPROJWNTANTMRi P.DO(.` _^
