Locate emergency telephone numbers and route to hospital prior to starting any work. <br />Notify site manager of your presence at the site and your field plans. Prior to work on- <br />site, a safety briefing will be conducted with all sub -contractors working in the area. This <br />shall include informing them of the hazards associated with site work, and all chemicals <br />anticipated. <br />For drilling or excavating - Position equipment and contractor upwind of the area to be <br />excavated. <br />Inspect exclusion zone for spark sources, paying careful attention to electrical equipment. <br />Do not start excavation or boring work until all possible sources of ignition have been <br />removed. Secure the area to prevent the public from approaching within 25 feet of any <br />sampling, digging, or drilling. <br />Work Limitation: - No eating, drinking, or SMOKING within 50 feet of the <br />work area. <br />No facial hair that would interfere with respirator fit. <br />Level C is not to be used without two fully trained staff <br />onsite. if breathing zone air monitoring results indicate <br />organic vapors greater than 25 ppm, up -grade to level C is <br />required. If breathing zone air monitoring results indicate <br />organic vapors greater than 100 ppm, work must be <br />suspended until the breathing zone air monitoring indicates <br />conditions returned to levels appropriate for Level C or D. <br />Stress breaks are to be taken at regular intervals of 2 hours, <br />or more frequently, if necessary. <br />No sparks or ignition sources within 50 feet of work area. <br />IV. Chemical Hazards <br />Soil or groundwater in contaminated areas may contain concentrations of benzene, <br />toluene, ethyl benzene, xylenes, MTBE, naphthalene, methylnaphthalene and heavy <br />metals. Benzene is a potential human carcinogen. <br />Routes of Exposure: <br />Benzene, toluene and xylenes are volatile organic compounds and can be absorbed <br />by the body via inhalation, ingestion, contact and absorption.
