Air pumps should be placed within easy reach using an OSHA
approved ladder, elevated platform or by placing the pump on a
stake. Personnel should be thoroughly familiar with the use,
limitations and operating characteristics of the monitoring
instruments.
Perform continuous monitoring in variable atmospheres.
Use intrinsically safe instruments until the absence of
combustible gases or vapors are determined.
Proper protective clothing such as gloves and goggles should be
used when handling corrosive substances. 15 -minute eyewash
and first aid should be available. Handle and store corrosives in
appropriate areas.
Monitoring )Equipment and procedures:
OVM with 10.0 eV lamp. Take background readings in the area you do not
suspect to be contaminated. Let instrument run continuously, or set on
standby mode. Take readings in the breathing zone upon initiating site
work. Log readings at least every hour in the breathing zone. The OVM
should be consulted more frequently than every hour if there is a question
regarding appropriate action level. For an up -grade to be warranted,
readings in the breathing zone must persist for a time, i.e., 5 to 10 minutes.
This is a judgment call. Spikes on the OVM above the action level do not
call for an up -grade.
ACTION LEVELS: If readings are 0 to <25 ppm above background in the
breathing zone, continue to level D.
Readings from >25 to 100 ppm above background, in the breathing zone,
require Level C. Readings over 100 ppm in the breathing zone require up-
grade to Level B.
Team Members:
Site Safety Officer
Health and Safety Officer
Site Entry Procedures:
Name
Tom Landwehr
Kathy Brodrick
In
Responsibility
Site Safety Coordinator
Corporate Health and Safety
