EPA IDENTIFICATION NUMBER FACT SHEET
Permanent EPA Identification numbers are required by Federal and State laws
for transporters, Treatment Storage and Disposal Facilities (TSD's) and
generators who produce a hazardous waste. The generator and disposal
facility numbers are site specific. This means that if your business moves
to a new location you must notify EPA of the closure of the old location
and obtain a number for the new location of your business. The
application form is EPA form 8700-12, "Notification of Hazardous Waste
Activity". A responsible representative of the company must sign this form
in order for a EPA ID number to be issued. The turn -around time for
issuance of permanent numbers is four to six weeks. Under justifiable
circumstances we may acknowledge your number sooner. In order to do so you
must attach a cover letter to the application explaining your situation.
Issuance of provisional (1 -time) numbers takes ten working days. These EPA
ID numbers are not permanent and are flagged as such in our database.
These numbers are given out only in one-time generator situations, i.e.
closure of a business, underground tank removal or asbestos removal.
FOR ONE-TIME REMOVAL OF ASBESTOS (RESIDENTIAL AND COMMERCIAL) OR
UNDERGROUND TANK REMOVAL, THE GENERATOR MAY CALL THE STATE FOR AN EPA
NUMBER OVER THE PHONE - (916) 324-1781.
EMERGENCY EPA ID NUMBERS ARE GIVEN OVER THE PHONE BY EPA ONLY. NOTE:
THESE NUMBERS ARE FOR SPILLS AND CRISIS SITUATIONS WHICH THREATEN
HUMAN HEALTH OR THE ENVIRONMENT. EPA MUST SPEAK TO A REPRESENTATIVE
OF A RESPONDING AGENCY OR FIRE DEPARTMENT AND TO THE GENERATOR OF THE
WASTE. THESE NUMBERS ARE TO BE USED ONLY ONCE. CALL (415) 974-7473,
M -F 9AM-3PM OR AFTER HOURS (415) 974-8131.
EPA ID numbers contain three letters followed by nine numbers. The first
two letters represent the state (e.g., CA, AZ, NV) the third letter is a
"D" or "T". Federally owned sites have two letters and ten numbers.
It is also the responsibility of the generator to contact the State Board
of Equalization to register with the Board (916) 322-9070.
Forms are available form the State Department of Health Services by calling
(916) 324-1781.
Questions on Hazardous Waste Regulations should be directed to the
State Regional Offices:
North Coast Section - Emeryville (415) 540-2043
Northern California Section - Sacramento (916) 855-7700
Southern California Section - Los Angeles (213) 620-2380
Fresno District Office (209) 445-5938
For assistance with waste assessment or processes regarding waste
minimization or recycling you may direct your calls to the Alternative
Technology Section: (916) 324-1807.
