HAZARDS MITIGATION & MONITORING <br /> A. GENERAL WORK PRACTICES <br /> Workers must use the "buddy system" when wearing any respiratory <br /> protective device. <br /> Workers should be alert to any abnormal behavior on the part of <br /> other workers that might indicate distress, disorientation, or ill <br /> effects from exposure to chemical contaminants. <br /> Workers should never ignore symptoms that could indicate exposure <br /> to chemical contaminants. Any symptoms should be reported <br /> immediately to their supervisor or the site safety officer. <br /> Level D personal protective equipment (PPE) will be used at the <br /> site. Level D PPE consists of hard hat, safety glasses, steel-toed <br /> boots, and routine work clothes. <br /> Entry of observers to the site shall be controlled by the site <br /> safety officer. <br /> B. CHEMICAL HAZARDS MITIGATION <br /> unnecessary contact with the contaminated materials shall be <br /> avoided. <br /> Latex gloves shall be worn when handling or sampling contaminated <br /> materials . <br /> Remote sampling devices such as a bailer for water samples shall be <br /> used to minimize exposure to potentially contaminated materials. <br /> When possible, operations shall be conducted upwind to lessen <br /> exposure to air contaminants emanating from contaminated areas. <br /> C. PHYSICAL HAZARDS MITIGATION <br /> Buried utilities shall be located (call 1-800-642-2444) and marked <br /> before drilling or excavating. A 10-foot clearance from overhead <br /> power lines shall be maintained. <br /> Ear plugs shall be used when noise levels prevent conversation. <br /> During periods of high temperature, frequent breaks in a shady spot <br /> should be taken. Water should be drunk frequently. <br /> During periods of low temperature, frequent breaks in a warm spot <br /> should be taken. Drink hot liquids frequently. Wear multilayered <br /> clothing. Avoid excessive sweating. <br /> A first aid kit shall be available on-site for treatment of minor <br /> cuts and scratches. <br /> 4 <br />
