former bottom of the tank. Soil sample PBG-1 was collected from the pipeline trench at a depth
of approximately 3.5 feet below grade, approximately 1.5 feet below the base of the former
piping. The soil samples were collected from the bucket of a backhoe.
Groundwater was not encountered in the tank excavation.
In order to evaluate soil disposal options, a two-point composite soil sample, labeled CS-(1-2),
— was collected from the soil stockpile by IT personnel, under the supervision and direction of Ms.
Letitia Briggs of the SJCPHS-EHD. The composite soil sample was collected by pushing the
sample tubes into the stockpile until full.
After each sample was collected, the ends of the sample tube were covered with teflon tape and
capped. The samples were then appropriately labeled, placed in a cooler with ice, and
transported under chain-of-custody protocol to the analytical laboratory. A copy of the chain of
custody is included in Appendix D.
2.3 Sample Analyses
The samples were transported and submitted under chain of custody documentation to
` McCampbell Analytical Labs, Inc., an ELAP-certified laboratory in Pacheco, California. The
soil samples were analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons as diesel (TPH-D) under EPA
method 8015 (modified). The samples were further analyzed for benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene,
and xylenes (BTEX) constituents and for the fuel oxygenate methyl tertiary butyl ether(MTBE)
under EPA method 8260.
2.4 Soil Sample Analytical Results
TPH-D was detected in the analysis of composite soil sample CS-(1-2) at a concentration of 1.7
parts per million(ppm). No other analytes were found in the laboratory analysis. Copies of the
laboratory analytical reports are included in Appendix D. Analytical results are summarized in
Table 1 and depicted in Figure 3.
3.0 Soil Disposal
Based on the results of the laboratory analysis, approximately 102 cubic yards (78 tons) of soil
generated from tank removal activities were transported on January 23, 2001 to Forward Landfill,
CNCD\02-21-01\O:SHAREWSTIO1-0012.doc 3
