8.4.3 Injury Due to Cold <br /> First aid for frostbit consists of the following procedures: <br /> • Decontaminate victim <br /> • Bring victim indoors and quickly rewarm the affected areas in water <br /> between 102° and 105° F <br /> • Give victim a warm drink--NOT coffee, tea, or alcohol <br /> • Do not permit the victim to smoke <br /> • Keep the frozen parts in warm water or covered with warm cloths for <br /> 30 minutes, even though the tissue will be very painful as it thaws <br /> • Evaluate the injured areas and cover with sterile, soft, dry material <br /> • Keep the victim warm and get immediate medical care <br /> • Do not rub the frostbitten part <br /> • Do not allow blisters to be broken <br /> • Do not use ice, snow, gasoline, or anything cold on frostbite <br /> • Do not use heat lamps or hot water bottles to rewarm the part <br /> • Do not place the affected part near a hot stove <br /> First aid for exposure to cold (hypothermia) consists of the following procedures: <br /> • Decontaminate victim <br /> • Bring victim into a warm area as quickly as possible <br /> • Remove wet or cold garments <br /> • Dry the person thoroughly <br /> • Provide warm, dry clothing or covering <br /> • Provide rapid but gentle rewarming <br /> • Give victim a warm drink, NOT coffee, tea or alcohol <br /> • Keep the victim warm and get immediate medical care <br /> 80500000 H:UiEALTH\FNLHSP April 21, 1993 <br /> FEMA USTs Fml G.mric HSP 27 <br />
