1100'93 08:19 $714 454 9800 MAJESTIC TECH 2008
4.0 SUMMARY
1Shis project involves the following hazardous waste remediation. act' -'es:
the removal, decontamination, and disposal if two underground stcrase
tanks, and all associated piping and ancillary equipment: the removal of
dispensers, rangingin size from 500 - 6,000 gallon capacity. and were
used for gasoline.
The basic operations associated with the tank removal work include the
following: Open and sample tang contents. purge tank. excavate and
stockpile material to expose tank and piping, disconnect piping from
tank, decontaminate and remove piping, removve tank, clean and
decontaminate tank exterior, decontaminate tanK interior, collect and
analyze decontamination rinsate, sample and analyze soil (stockpiled and
at bottom of excavation), remove and dispose of concrete hold down slabs,
anchors, and straps (metal tanks). remove and stockpile contaminated soil
per tang. cut up and dispose of tank sections, transport and properly
dispose of all waste generated (soil, tank residue, etc.), and backfill
excavation and pave e\lrface.
Based on the site history, a variety of chemical hazards may be
encountered related to gasoline. Specified chemical substance which may
be present include petroleum hydrocarbons (i. e.. naphthe)(and its
constituents inculding trichloroethane and tetraethyl), benzene, toluene,
ethyl benzene, xylene, and tetraethyl lead. Based on the field
operations to be performed, sit personnel may be exposed t0 a range of
,gtig physical hazards, Including heat stress, noise, open excavations.
operating equipment, vehicle hazards. contact with live utilities.
flammable/explosive atmospheres. and related hazards.
Although most phases of the project may only require Level D protection
for field personnel, some activities may necessitate the use of Level C
protection. Depending on the presence of chemical contamination, the
following tasks mag require the use of Level C protection: tank opening
and checking of Contents, pumping/removal of tank residuals, excavation
and sampling of contaminated soils, decontamination of tank surfaces. Air
pruifying respirators (APRs) shall be used for any operation, or in any
work area where total ionizable hydrocarbon concentrations exceed 10 ppm.
Similarly, APRs shall also be worn anytime airborne concentrations of
benzene are identified above 0.5 ppm, as detected using color indicationg
tubes for benzene.
Regardless of individual -.sex safety requirements. all operations shall
be performed in compliance with the Federal OSHA Hazardous Waste
operations and Emegency Response standard, 29 CFR 1910.120 and the
equivalent Cal -OSHA standard, 8 CCR 5192•
The project is anticipated to begin in Nov. 3, 1993.and is expected to be
completed in approximately three months.
