C. INSTALLATION <br /> WHEN WE WERE EVALUATING THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF USTs THAT WERE AVAILABLE, WE <br /> RESEARCHED THE MOST COMMON CAUSES OF UST FAILURE IN INDUSTRY. TWO FAILURES <br /> SEEMED TO OCCUR MOST OFTEN: <br /> 1. IMPROPER INSTALLATION <br /> 2. CORROSION <br /> IT WAS FELT THAT WE COULD ADDRESS IMPROPER INSTALLATION THROUGH R.E. TRAINING, <br /> USING ONLY MANUFACTURER APPROVED CONTRACTORS AND WRITING DETAILED <br /> SPECIFICATIONS, <br /> CORROSION WAS A MORE DIFFICULT PROBLEM TO RESOLVE. THE OPTIONS ARE TO USE <br /> NON-CORROSIVE MATERIALS OR INCORPORATE SOME TYPE OF CATHODIC PROTECTION <br /> SYSTEM. THE LATTER REQUIRES ON-GOING MAINTENANCE, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER YOU <br /> USE AN IMPRESSED CURRENT OR SACRIFICIAL ANODE TYPE PROTECTION. FURTHERMORE, <br /> AT THE TIME OF THE STUDY, EVEN THE BEST PROTECTED STEEL TANK COULD NOT BE <br /> INSTALLED IN SOILS THAT HAD A CONDUCTIVITY OF 2000 OHS OR LESS PER CU. <br /> CENTIMETER. <br /> FIBERGLASS COATED STEEL TANKS WERE ALSO EVALUATED, BUT ANY "HOLIDAY" IN THE <br /> OUTER COATING SERVES TO CONCENTRATE CORROSION THEREBY ACCELERATING FAILURE. <br /> A DOUBLE-WALLED FIBERGLASS TANK WAS CHOSEN BASED ON THE AFOREMENTIONED <br /> FINDINGS. <br /> THE FOLLOWING ARE INSTALLATION GUIDELINES FOR DOUBLE WALL FIBERGLASS USTs. <br /> ALSO PROVIDED ARE SOME OF THE INSTALLATION PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED AND <br /> ACCOMPLISHED RESOLUTIONS TO THOSE PROBLEMS. <br />
