SECTION II
PREPARATION AND ASSEMBLY
A• Pipe Preparation
All factory spigols and couplings must be cut off the contain-
ment piping prior to installation. Containment litlines accept
only plain -end pipe from which all surface gloss has been
removed.
The ends of the containment pipe must be machined or
thoroughly sanded for a length of at least 3Y4'. Any surface
Irregularities must be removed. This is most easily accom-
plished by using a Smith Fiberglass Products secondary con-
lairunenl scarfing adapter kit. This kit consists of a special
blade (3% long), blue blade holder, and 3' IS 4' gauges which
are required to set the loaf. The kit is easily adapled to the
Ze.6' Smith Fiberglass Products standard tapering tool.
Assemble the mandrel and special blade holder per In-
:,Iruclions in Manual 9106. Slide the proper size gauge at the
way to the back of the mandrel. Insect the special blade into
the blade holder wain the square end leading and the wide
side next to the blade holder. The square end of the blade
must touch the tool body.
Rotate the tool body to the position shown in Figure 1 making
sure that the blade rests against the gauge. After positioning
the black mark on the gauge under the blade, be sure the
blade makes uniform contact with the gauge.
An altenuals method of pps wit preparation Is sadin i with
40-60 gnil sandpaper to remove aY surface gloss. Bell sanders
or a coarse cut [let file may be used. The sanded length must
be a nwvimum of 33/4'.
B. Pipe Assembly
The containment pipe must be positioned ovw the product
pipe price to bonding of the product pipe. After lesling of the
product pipe, the containment 6ttiNs should be installed and
the containment system tested.
Typically, tie length of the containment system Is delermined
Fittings are assembled with '/4*- 20 NC hex head bolls along
with Smith Fiberglass Products adhesive. (NOTE: Fillings
are supplied by Smith Fiberglass Products without
Refer to bondug procedures in Manual 1055 lot adhesive
mixing and surface clearing
Thoroughly nix all of the adhesive bass with all of the adhe-
sive hardener. Do not attempt to split a kit. The adhesive
should have a uniform consistency and flow smoothly off the
mixing stick.
II is necessary to add leer to thicken the adhesive. The filler is
packaged 1n premeasured quantities to use with DS -7014 or
DS -7069 adhesive kits and is available from your local Smith
Fiberglass Products distributor.
Filler should be added In three steps, thoroughly mixing be
Iween additions. All of the Idler In the bag should be used.
NOTE: Adhesive and hardener must be thoroughly mixed
before adding the filler.
Allot clears g all sardcd sudaces with the cleaner supplied in
the adhesive kit, apply a thick coaling (1/16' minimum) of ad-
hesive to the socket (bell) area of the filling. Liberally coal the
labs (Mit bonding sudaces) of both halves of the fillings with
adhesive (1116' nunimum thickness). (See Figure 4) Next, ap-
ply a thick coating (1/16' nunimum) of adhesive to the sanded
surfaces of the pipe ends.
NOTES: 1. The stir suck supplieJ with the adhesive kit works
well as an applicator.
2. Two-piece containment fittings require more
adhesive than Is normally used with Smith
Fiberglass Products bell and spigot joints.
Use the bolts, n0„s and washers to assemble the fillings
on i'4e pipe. Two Tile' wrenches are required for the
looks. Note Thal A P,at washer Is required on both halves of
the !Mims. (See : Igure 4) Tighten the nuts and bolts
Completely.
Make win Ulan skit ow1ve Rhea any gape bNtveen paps endo
Care should be taken not to disturb a completed containment
piping joint when assembling additional joints. The adhesive
must be tufty cured before applying stress to assembled
pints.
Precautions:
1. Avoid contact with the adhesive and hardener
since they are capable of causing skin and eye
irritations Gloves and eye protection are sug-
pesled. II contact is made. flush with wale( and
wash with soap and water. Although the
hardener is only mildly toxic, avoid inhaling
lumen by working in well ventilated area
2. Solvent containers may be under pressure.
Use caution when opening. Wear eye protectnn
In case of accidental exposure, flush with plenty
of water and 'seek medical attention it untation
develops Use with adequate ventilation Avoid
breathing vapor. Avoid confect with skin Wash
thoroughly ager handling and before eating or
smoking
E. Adhesive Cure
Cure time is dependent on ambient temperature. Cure lime at
75' F is 4 to 5 hours For cure cycle curves, refer to the in-
structions In the adhesive kits Use of external heal (such as
hot as guns) will shorten the cure times and is highly iecom.
mended lot all Installations where the temperature is below
70•F. Extarnal heal is essential for temperatures below 60•17
Direct flames should net be used to cure the adhesive. Hol
spots may cause overheating of the adhesive resulting In
a bad bond.
Pipe sections should not be handfed OF stressed until the glue
fine has returned to ambient temperature.
F. Testing
of a lermination tiding (Figure 5) This lest piping may be
permanently installed and used lot future system tests or as
an outlet to pressure or leak detelclWn devices II the lest
piping is to be installed lempoearily, use care not to
threads may be damaged durYg removal it overtightened
Smith Fiberglass Products recommends testing 3' 6' second-
ary containment pipirg systems wilt air at pressures up to 10
psig The most convenient place to introduce air to the con-
lainineni piping pressure lest Is at the bulk storage tank (See
Figure 5) It is advantageous to leave the system pressurized
until the installation is complete in order to monilo for possi-
ble damage during additional construction. The low pressure
and low volume of secondary containment piping systems
make this air test a sale procedure it normal safety pro-
cedures are followed
