'® The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Company
1700 East Golf Road
Schaumburg, Illinois 60173-5860
November 30, 1992
Mr. Boyd Gibbons - Director
Department of Fish and Game
1416 9th Street
Sacramento, CA 95814
Dear Mr. Gibbons:
The purpose of this letter is to provide a formal apology to Fish and Game Warden Art
Ramirez and to the Department for the way Santa Fe Railway handled and responded to certain
efforts by Mr. Ramirez to get the Company to remove treated timbers and other construction
debris from alongside our bridge known as AT&SF Railway Bridge 1134.8 near Orwood
California.
We became aware of this matter in late October of this year and, upon review of the file,
have concluded that many of the problems which developed between March and October of this
year in connection with this bridge project resulted, at least in part, from some misunderstanding
between our local supervision and Mr. Ramirez. It is apparent to us, however, that our forces
did not respond appropriately to Mr. Ramirez' efforts and for that we apologize.
We have taken steps internally to ensure that supervision at all levels understands our
corporate responsibilities to the communities where we operate and the importance of
cooperating with local authorities in their efforts to enforce laws and regulations under their
jurisdiction. We are sure you will find us to be more responsive in the future.
Very truly yours,
J. R. Moreland
Vice President - Law & General Counsel
M. W. Franke
Vice President - Maintenance
A Santa Fe Pacific Company
